Welcome
I’m excited to share my thoughts with you on everything Feng Shui. My aim is to help people understand Feng Shui as a mechanism to explore their world, both externally and internally.
We are often troubled by issues in our external world well before we are conscious of the underlying blockages in our internal domain. It is through the creation of a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing environment that we are often able to explore the issues that confront us.
So, these pages are for those that are interested in design and the joy that beautiful things bring, whilst open to explore their own self development. For those interested in learning more about themselves and excited to understand how positive energy can enhance their general well-being.
Each month we will explore the various sectors of one’s home; consider both the yin and yang aspects; and generally, ponder the impact of energy flow on important aspects of our lives.
It is important to clarify that Feng Shui is not necessarily a single methodology that can be superimposed on a dwelling. Rather, it is a number of different modalities that create a complex matrix from where we assess the nature of the house and how it might impact on the occupant. Each house has its own story to tell, its own journey to share and its own relationship with you. Join me in exploration!
Where do I begin?
A good place to start is at the macro level. Start with your location and site. Using Maps or Google Earth explore your location.
View your property initially on the suburb level or beyond. Using the satellite mode assess the terrain you sit in. How do the mountain ridges flow? Where are you in relation to water courses? Are there parklands or reserves close by? All of these geological features generate positive energy.
Now bring your view to street level. What features characterise your street? Is it tree-lined and quiet or cosmopolitan and busy? Do you face an oncoming street or do you face a train line? Does the road slope or does your site slope backwards or forwards? All features, whether man-made or natural, affect the nature of the chi and slow or intensify its flow. This type of information helps determine the type of energy you and your family sit in and assesses the potential impact on your lives.
One particular theory of Feng Shui, the Eight Mansion theory, identifies the best locations and directions of the occupants based on their individual birthdates. Unfortunately, many people purchased their home not having this knowledge and may not want to, or be in a position to, move. Arming yourself with a detailed assessment of the nature of the chi of your site provides the opportunity to rectify or counterbalance any inherent problems.
Once this has been achieved you can begin at your front gate.
The view from the porch
The front of your house provides a Feng Shui practitioner a lot of information. Many Feng Shui theories equate the façade of the home as its face, the front door metaphorically described as the mouth receiving the chi.
So, what is the front of your house like? Is there a prominent front door, unhampered and clear, visible upon entry? Or is your front door at the side, difficult for visitors or friends to find? Are there windows at the front providing a clear view of the entrance way or do you live in a modern home with a solid front and all views from the back of the house?
And what of your neighbours? Are the properties that surround you similar in size and character or do they overpower and overshadow your home? Does your home blend well with its natural surroundings or do you stand out or make a statement? Again, all of this is important information in a Feng Shui analysis.
Imagine Chi as a low flowing cloud, how does it travel to your front door? Does it gently meander around a winding path or does it rush up a straight trajectory to your door. And when it arrives, is the entrance wide enough to greet it? Is your house number visible, does your front door bell work? What does your front porch say about you and how you greet your guests? Chi is a guest, it’s up to you to welcome it into your home.
